NaNoWriMo: Day 14

Nope, I didn’t write yesterday. I needed the sleep in the morning and I am swamped at work right now with a bunch of documents with deadlines today. I had hoped to write in the evening to make up for not writing in the morning, but wound up working over instead.

I got in 1,000ish words this morning. I’m stopping myself now because I’m hoping to get to work a little early and try to get a head start on finishing up these documents. That way, I can write more in the evening, if things go as planned. We’ll see!

Right now, I’m focusing on the relationship between characters. I know this is part of what slows down the plot, but I really do love writing about romantic relationships and platonic relationships and just trying to get inside the minds and motivations of my characters.

I finished re-reading a fanfiction of mine last night (for those of you who don’t know, fanfiction is writing stories about already published works, movies, video games) from last night. It occurred to me that a  lot of the characters sounded the same and reacted to things the same way. I’m hoping I’ve grown as a writer from that (as this fanfiction was written close to 10 years ago). I’d share actual pieces of my story beyond sentences and plot references on here, but I’m nervous about plagiarism. Hopefully everyone will get to read it one day in paperback or something!

Additionally, I have to keep telling myself that it was only the first draft of the story and that editing helps refine the characters’s voices. After all, once you get to the end of the story, you have a much better idea about them as people, so you can go back and adjust accordingly during your edits. Editing is both the best and the worst.

Here’s hoping I can do some more writing tonight!
